Education Advocacy with The Traveller Movement
What support can The Traveller Movement provide?
Here at The Traveller Movement, we have a Community Advocacy Caseworker who can support Romani (Gypsy), Roma, and Irish Traveller families facing significant educational challenges, and who often experience discrimination in the provision of educational and social support services. We can provide support in the following areas:
- How to apply for a school place
- Advice on how to tackle bullying towards Romani (Gypsy), Roma, and Irish Traveller young people
- Advice and support for education-related expenses (school uniform, equipment, and school transport)
- Advice on registering special educational needs and disabilities, as well as the provision of an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- Support with issues of non-attendance and the use of ‘the t-code’ for applicable absences
- Advice and support on all types of school exclusions (including self-exclusions)
- Advice on how to provide effective elective home education and when to opt for formal education
- Support with finding extra educational tuition
- Advice on progression into further and higher education courses and forms of study
The Traveller Movement also provides support, guidance, and training for education-linked organisations who wish to improve their engagement with Romani (Gypsy), Roma, and Irish Traveller communities.
Please contact our Community Advocacy Caseworker on 07908 433412 or at esju@travellermovement.org.uk for support and advice.
